Senior Battery Engineer

About the role

Wing is seeking a Senior Battery Engineer to lead the design, integration, and optimization of energy storage systems for its autonomous delivery drones. Based onsite in Palo Alto, you will work with a fast‑moving hardware team to ensure battery performance, safety, and reliability meet the demanding requirements of flight operations.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain expert knowledge of current and emerging battery technologies and industry trends.
• Evaluate solid‑state, silicon‑anode, and other next‑generation cell technologies to shape Wing’s long‑term energy storage roadmap.
• Lead selection of battery technologies for future aircraft, balancing energy density, power output, thermal behavior, and cycle life.
• Direct design, development, and testing of battery systems with a focus on safety, reliability, charging speed, and lifetime.
• Serve as the primary point of contact with contract manufacturers and oversee certification of battery systems to aviation regulations.
• Act as the company‑wide battery expert, collaborating with policy and regulatory teams to influence standards.
• Partner with hardware, software, and flight‑systems teams to integrate high‑fidelity battery data into vehicle health monitoring and flight contingency logic.
• Analyze battery performance data from flight tests to drive continuous improvement.

Required profile

• Proven experience in battery pack hardware design and integration for high‑performance applications.
• Deep understanding of cell selection, characterization, and validation processes.
• Experience with battery management system (BMS) integration and thermal‑management solutions.
• Knowledge of aviation safety standards and certification processes for flight‑critical hardware.
• Ability to lead cross‑functional teams and communicate technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.
• Strong analytical skills for interpreting performance data and optimizing designs.
