Senior Accounting Manager

About the role

We are seeking a Senior Accounting Manager to join Kemper’s Accounting team at our Chicago headquarters. The role will lead efforts to modernize accounting processes, drive automation, and ensure high‑quality financial reporting across our life, health and property‑casualty insurance businesses.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement and oversee automation solutions for accounting processes, translating source data and user needs into efficient workflows.
• Supervise the preparation and review of monthly journal entries and account reconciliations using BlackLine.
• Mentor and develop staff, preparing them for future advancement.
• Build and analyze management reports to support business decisions.
• Evaluate complex technical accounting matters, including new standards and emerging transactions.
• Support the company’s SOX compliance program and coordinate with internal and external auditors.
• Lead special projects, delivering both strategic direction and hands‑on contributions.
• Manage HR aspects of the Accounting/Finance team, including recruiting and fostering high‑performing teams.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA preferred.
• 8‑10 years of experience in industry or public accounting, preferably within insurance.
• Proven leadership and mentoring abilities.
• Strong analytical and communication skills.

Required skills

• GAAP and SEC accounting knowledge.
• Experience with BlackLine for reconciliations.
• SOX compliance and audit coordination.
• Process automation and use of bots for accounting tasks.
