Safety Specialist – Heavy Civil

About the role

Our client, a leading heavy civil contractor, is looking for a Safety Specialist to support field operations and enhance safety performance across active construction projects. The role works closely with the Safety Director and project teams to ensure compliance with company policies, OSHA, DOT and client safety standards, fostering a proactive safety culture where every employee returns home safely.

Key responsibilities

• Partner with project teams to promote safe work practices on construction sites.
• Assist in maintaining participation in the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP).
• Coordinate and administer the drug‑free workplace program, including random testing.
• Support development, implementation, and continuous improvement of safety policies and procedures.
• Participate in employee safety orientation, training sessions, and ongoing education.
• Attend kickoff and pre‑construction meetings to identify hazards and develop safety plans.
• Conduct routine field inspections, safety observations, and compliance audits, documenting findings.
• Monitor adherence to OSHA, DOT, company, and client safety requirements.
• Investigate accidents, incidents, and near‑misses, identify root causes, and assist with corrective actions.
• Encourage open communication and proactive hazard reporting throughout the organization.
• Assist with additional safety initiatives and special projects as needed.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum three years of construction safety experience, preferably in heavy civil projects.
• Experience with roadway, highway, underground utility, earthwork, excavation, or site development projects is highly preferred.
• Current CHST or CSP certification.
• OSHA 500 and OSHA 510 certifications.
• Thorough knowledge of OSHA regulations, DOT requirements, and construction safety best practices.
