Roofer / Sheet Metal Mechanic

About the role

Georgetown University is seeking a skilled Roofer/Sheet Metal Mechanic to maintain and repair the roofs and related metal work across its campuses. The role involves hands‑on work on a variety of roofing materials and sheet‑metal installations to ensure safe, functional university facilities.

Key responsibilities

• Perform maintenance and repair on slate, tin, copper, hot‑tar, rubber and shingle roofs.
• Install, repair, and maintain gutters, downspouts and related drainage systems.
• Fabricate and install sheet‑metal components such as duct lines, metal louvers, drip pans, ornaments, murals and cornice work.
• Carry out journey‑level repairs following industry trade practices and safety regulations.
• Respond to service requests, scheduled preventive inspections and special projects.
• Operate high‑reach machines and standard trade tools.

Required profile

• Valid driver’s license for DC, Maryland or Virginia.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Completion of an apprenticeship or equivalent training in the roofing trade.
• Five years’ experience with residential and commercial roofing systems, including slate roofs.
• Five years’ experience fabricating and installing sheet‑metal systems.

Required skills

• Roofing with slate, tin, copper, hot‑tar, rubber and shingle materials.
• Gutter and downspout installation and repair.
• Sheet‑metal fabrication and installation (duct work, metal louvers, drip pans, ornamental metal work).
• Soldering and welding.
• Operation of high‑reach machines.
• Basic computer literacy (Windows 95).
