Robotics Mechanical Design Engineer – Sensing (Optimus)

About the role

The Tesla Robotics Team is building the Optimus humanoid robot to tackle boring, repetitive, and dangerous tasks. As a Mechanical Design Engineer focused on sensing, you will create the electrical architecture, harnesses, connectors, and dynamic electromechanical devices that enable the robot to sense and act.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to define sensor requirements and develop implementations.
• Prototype new sensing technologies and applications.
• Run validation tests, analyze sensor data, and iterate designs.
• Develop detailed CAD models and assemblies for mechanical components.
• Perform tolerance analysis, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and other simulations before production release.
• Create 2D GD&T drawings for manufacturing and inspection.
• Lead Design‑for‑Manufacturing (DFM) reviews with suppliers and support tooling bring‑up.

Required profile

• Proficiency in CAD tools, preferably CATIA.
• Experience with plastic injection molding, sheet‑metal stamping, and casting design.
• Strong background in 2D drafting with GD&T.
• Hands‑on experience with MATLAB and first‑principles analysis (physics, stress‑strain, thermal, tolerance).
• Familiarity with FEA tools such as ANSYS.
• Passion for electro‑mechanical product design and sustainable energy solutions.
