About the role
The Fish and Mussel Ecology Lab at LSU AgCenter seeks a Research Associate Specialist to support a multi‑year, grant‑funded program on invasive species ecology, physiology, and ecosystem functions. The role combines field sampling, laboratory analysis, and collaboration with graduate students and external partners.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct field work in freshwater systems, including boat operation, trailering, and overnight sampling trips.
- Collect and process data on plant, soil, and bivalve communities, focusing on freshwater mussels.
- Maintain laboratory and field equipment, aquaculture systems, and vehicles.
- Assist graduate students and coordinate with state, federal, and NGO collaborators.
- Analyze physiological responses of mussels to invasive species interactions and contribute to ecosystem‑function assessments.
Required profile
- BS or BA in biology, natural‑resource ecology, or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated experience with freshwater invertebrate field work and laboratory techniques.
- Ability to work extended outdoor hours in varying weather conditions.
- Self‑directed work style with capacity to create work plans, meet deadlines, and collaborate effectively.
Required skills
- Field data collection and boat operation.
- Aquaculture system management and aquatic animal husbandry.
- Knowledge of freshwater mussel ecology.
