Research Associate (Level 3‑5) – GIS & Cartography

About the role

The Louisiana Geological Survey seeks a Research Associate (Level 3, 4 or 5) to support its geologic mapping and research mission. The role combines GIS expertise, cartographic production, and field data collection to create high‑quality geologic maps and spatial data products.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in producing geologic quadrangle maps for USGS StateMap and Louisiana state mapping programs, including layout design, legend creation, and symbology compliance.
• Design, develop, and maintain spatial databases for geologic, geophysical, and energy‑related datasets, performing data validation and quality control.
• Conduct GPS/GNSS field surveys, process differential corrections, and integrate field observations into GIS databases.
• Develop and maintain web‑based GIS applications, story maps, and online data viewers for public dissemination.
• Provide GIS and cartographic support for research projects on energy resources, environmental studies, and geologic hazards.

Required profile

• Background in geology, geography, environmental science, or a related discipline.
• Experience with GIS software and cartographic workflows.
• Ability to work independently and collaborate with geologists and researchers.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to data quality.
