Registered Nurse – Psychiatric (RN)

About the role

The Psychiatric Registered Nurse provides direct and indirect patient care within the behavioral health unit of a 150‑bed hospital. You will assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for patients experiencing mental health crises, while supporting recovery in a safe therapeutic environment.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct psychiatric assessments and develop individualized care plans.
• Monitor patient conditions, evaluate responses to treatment, and adjust plans as needed.
• Administer prescribed medications, including psychotropics, and document accurately.
• Assist patients with activities of daily living and therapeutic routines.
• Participate in group, family, and individual therapeutic sessions.
• Provide education to patients and families about treatment, medications, and coping strategies.
• Coordinate care with the interdisciplinary team and support discharge planning.
• Engage in crisis intervention and behavioral de‑escalation when required.

Required profile

• Current RN license in Texas or a Compact State.
• Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required; BSN preferred.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Handle With Care (HWC) or Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification.
• Ability to work in a fast‑paced, emotionally dynamic environment.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems.
• Knowledge of behavioral health documentation standards.
• De‑escalation techniques and therapeutic communication.
