About the role
Join A.I.S., Inc. as a Reef Fish and Shrimp Fisheries Observer and work aboard commercial vessels in the Gulf of Mexico and South Atlantic. You will collect biological data, gear information, and by‑catch records to support the National Marine Fisheries Service and regional fisheries management.
Key responsibilities
- Record detailed observations of gear, fishing activity, and catch composition on vessels ranging from 30‑90 feet.
- Collect biological samples and identify fish, shrimp, marine mammals, seabirds, and sea turtles.
- Document vessel and gear selectivity information for shrimp and reef‑fish fisheries.
- Complete data entry and reporting forms during trips lasting 1‑45 days.
- Participate in a three‑week paid training program in Galveston, TX.
Required profile
- Willingness to spend extended periods at sea without internet or cellular service.
- Physical ability to handle heavy lifting, work odd hours, and endure rough sea conditions.
- Comfort with limited English communication on some crews.
- Commitment to environmental stewardship and fisheries sustainability.
