About the role
Applied Materials is seeking an experienced Quality Welding Engineer to lead weld quality for ultra‑high‑purity (UHP) gas delivery systems used in semiconductor process equipment. The role covers the full fabrication lifecycle, from procedure qualification to in‑process inspection, within a cleanroom environment.
Key responsibilities
- Develop, qualify, and maintain welding procedure specifications (WPS) and procedure qualification records (PQR) for orbital GTAW of UHP gas lines, panels, and chamber weldments.
- Establish and audit welder/operator qualification programs for orbital and manual welding personnel.
- Serve as the site subject‑matter expert on SEMI standards such as F78, F81, E49.8, and F70.
- Own weld quality in cleanroom cells, ensuring gowning discipline, purge‑gas control, surface‑finish verification and contamination prevention.
- Perform visual, boroscopic and dimensional weld inspections, drive root‑cause analysis and corrective actions for non‑conformances.
- Provide metallurgical oversight of 316L stainless steel and related UHP alloys, managing heat‑affected‑zone control and passivation requirements.
- Specify, evaluate and maintain orbital welding equipment from manufacturers such as Arc Machines, Polysoude and Orbitalum.
- Partner with manufacturing engineering, quality assurance and supply‑chain teams to qualify internal and supplier weld sources.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Welding, Materials/Metallurgical, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent hands‑on experience.
- 5+ years of welding engineering or weld‑quality experience in semiconductor capital equipment or regulated high‑purity environments.
- Demonstrated knowledge of SEMI standards F78, F81, E49.8 and F70.
- Hands‑on experience with orbital GTAW equipment (Arc Machines, Polysoude, Orbitalum).
- Strong understanding of 316L stainless‑steel metallurgy, electropolishing, and passivation.
- Experience working in a certified cleanroom (Class 100/ISO 5) with strict contamination controls.
- Familiarity with WPS/PQR development and welder qualification under AWS D1.2, ASME Section IX or equivalent.
