Public Information Specialist

About the role

The County of Santa Barbara is seeking a full‑time Public Information Specialist to join the County Executive Office. This home‑based position will focus on creating content, managing social media channels, producing digital newsletters, and supporting public and community outreach initiatives. The incumbent will work closely with the County Public Information Officer to ensure consistent, transparent communication across all departments and may serve as a spokesperson when assigned.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement department‑wide public information programs and campaigns.
• Create and edit content for websites, social media, newsletters, and press releases.
• Manage social media platforms and monitor audience engagement.
• Coordinate messaging across multiple county departments to maintain a unified voice.
• Act as a departmental spokesperson and provide backup support to the Public Information Officer.
• Supervise staff or contractors as needed and perform duties in the PIO’s absence.

Required profile

• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
• Bilingual English/Spanish preferred to enhance community accessibility.
• Strong ability to produce clear, engaging public‑facing content.
• Experience working in a government or public‑sector communications environment.
