Public Information Officer

About the role

The Public Information Officer works in the Office of the Spokesperson for the Secretary‑General, providing daily media coverage and briefing support on UN activities worldwide. Reporting directly to the Spokesperson, the incumbent helps keep senior UN leadership informed of breaking news and prepares communication products for internal and external audiences.

Key responsibilities

• Provide in‑depth, daily coverage of a designated region or thematic issue, monitoring political, social, economic and humanitarian developments.
• Select and summarize breaking news for the “Spokesperson’s alert and daily headlines” distributed to senior UN officials.
• Draft notes for daily press briefings, create daily summaries for the website, and produce the weekly “Week ahead” planning tool for journalists.
• Maintain contacts with desk officers across UN departments, programmes and agencies to gather information and advise on media handling.
• Follow Security Council deliberations and other relevant UN processes as needed.

Required profile

• Works under the direct supervision of the Spokesperson and Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary‑General.
• Responsible for monitoring and reporting on developments that may affect the Organization.
