Public Information Officer – Hybrid

About the role
The Utah Department of Health and Human Services is seeking a skilled Public Information Officer to join its Public Affairs and Education team. Working in a hybrid setting, you will act as the primary media liaison, shaping communication strategies that support the agency’s mission and public image.
Key responsibilities
- Serve as spokesperson and media liaison, coordinating interviews and issuing statements on behalf of DHHS.
- Proactively pitch stories to local and national media while responding promptly to inquiries.
- Develop and implement communication strategies that educate the public about DHHS policies and programs.
- Create, edit, and publish content for social media, email newsletters, publications, and the agency website using AP style and the DHHS style guide.
- Research, verify facts, and address inquiries or complaints from the public and stakeholders.
- Represent DHHS at public events, community activities, meetings, and hearings.
- Monitor media and social media coverage, providing analysis to guide strategic decisions.
- Collaborate with graphic artists, web designers, photographers, and videographers to produce visual communications.
- Liaise with other agencies and partners to coordinate joint communication efforts.
Required profile
- Demonstrated experience advising on communication strategy for a public‑sector organization.
- Strong knowledge of media relations, public relations principles, and alternative audience engagement methods.
- Proven ability to communicate effectively with journalists, respond to media inquiries, and prepare public statements.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a clear, concise style.
- Familiarity with AP style and editorial best practices.
