Public Defender Attorney (Level 1-4)

About the role

The Waycross Judicial Circuit Public Defender’s Office is seeking qualified attorneys to join the State of Georgia as Assistant Public Defenders. Positions are available at levels 1 through 4, matching the candidate’s experience. The role involves representing indigent criminal defendants in Superior Court and contributing to the mission of equitable justice.

Key responsibilities

• Zealously represent indigent clients at all stages of the criminal process.
• Evaluate cases for referrals to accountability courts, diversion programs, and social services.
• Provide training, guidance, and mentorship to less‑experienced attorneys.
• Perform related duties as assigned by the Circuit Public Defender.

Required profile

• Juris Doctorate from an accredited institution.
• License to practice law in Georgia, or eligibility to sit for the Georgia Bar and obtain licensure within one year of hiring.
• Member in good standing of the State Bar of Georgia.
• Strong commitment to indigent criminal defense.

Required skills

• Experience in criminal defense representation.
• Knowledge of Georgia criminal procedure and court rules.
• Ability to assess case eligibility for diversion and accountability programs.
