Project Engineer – Design

About the role

The Road Commission for Oakland County is looking for a Project Engineer – Design to lead the design and delivery of roadway, bridge, drainage and related transportation infrastructure projects. This full‑time, overtime‑eligible position offers meaningful project ownership and a clear path toward senior engineering or supervisory roles.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate design of roadway, intersection, drainage, bridge/culvert, traffic, pedestrian and safety improvement projects.
• Prepare, review and coordinate preliminary and final construction plans, specifications, cost estimates and engineer’s estimates.
• Support MDOT Local Agency Program and RCOC‑funded project delivery requirements.
• Gather and evaluate survey, right‑of‑way, geotechnical, utility, hydraulic, traffic and environmental data.
• Conduct field reviews to assess site conditions, constructability and project risks.
• Provide technical direction to technicians, designers and support staff.
• Review consultant submittals for quality, completeness, constructability and compliance with standards.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
• 5–8 years of roadway or transportation engineering design experience.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
• Experience with MDOT Local Agency Program and bridge/culvert design is an asset.

Required skills

• Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D.
