Principal HVAC Designer (Contract)

About the role

We are seeking a Principal HVAC Designer to join our client’s team in Greenville, SC on a contract basis. The role involves leading complex HVAC design projects, creating detailed 2D and 3D models, and ensuring compliance with industry standards.

Key responsibilities

• Operate under detailed instructions and provide essential technical knowledge.
• Design and produce 3D layouts of complex HVAC scopes, potentially serving as Design Area Lead.
• Create, modify, and approve 2D and 3D CAD drawings of moderate to advanced complexity.
• Conduct 3D model reviews, generate estimates, schedules, progress reports, and key quantity tracking.
• Perform bulk material take‑off analysis and ensure adherence to industry codes and internal procedures.
• Walk down field systems, interpret directions, and generate advanced design details.
• Review vendor equipment documentation for compliance and resolve discrepancies.
• Direct, check, and approve the work of other designers.

Required profile

• U.S. citizenship is mandatory for this contract.
• At least 15 years of drafting/design experience in engineering or construction; associate degree preferred.
• Experience in nuclear or specialized engineering environments is a plus.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision and guide junior designers.
• Working knowledge of federal, state, and local codes, including DOE orders.
• Strong communication skills with multidisciplinary teams.

Required skills

• Proficiency in AutoCAD, MicroStation, SP3D HVAC Package, and S3D.
• 3D modeling experience (S3D preferred) and Navisworks navigation.
• Bluebeam for document review.
• Ductwork and HVAC equipment sizing.
• Development of Air Flow Diagrams (AFDs) and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
• Creation and review of SP3D models.
• Experience with bulk material take‑off and quantity tabulation.
• Familiarity with industry codes and standards for nuclear or specialized projects.
