Power Plant Technician

About the role

Amentum is hiring a Power Plant Technician to operate and monitor the mechanical equipment of a power plant under the supervision of the Utilities Supervisor or their on-site representative. The technician coordinates regular and irregular generator maintenance with the Lead Power Plant Mechanic, works with linemen and other infrastructure personnel to resolve issues, and takes part in goal-setting and strategic planning for mission support. The position involves rotating day, swing or night shifts and deployment to Antarctica.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain a safe workplace and comply with ASC ESH, waste management and quality assurance requirements, providing documentation as needed
• Monitor power plant parameters, diesel engine/generator and switchgear parameters, and the waste heat recovery system, wind turbine production and auxiliary equipment
• Adjust diesel generators and auxiliary systems to keep the plant efficient and reliable, and adjust the power distribution system by adding or removing feeders
• Keep operating logbooks and databases, start and secure diesel generators, and maintain their operating hours spread to forecast maintenance
• Respond to unscheduled equipment failures, assist the Power Plant Mechanic with scheduled maintenance and repairs, and keep the plant clean
• Advise the Utilities Supervisor on equipment status, train the Power Plant Operator on mechanical equipment, and support ASC metrics
• Work with partner companies, the National Science Foundation and military officials, and take part in dormitory chores while deployed

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED
• At least 2 years of power plant experience (diesel, gas turbine, nuclear, hydroelectric or renewable); equivalent diesel engine or electrical maintenance experience accepted
• Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods, with medical, dental, drug screening, background checks and facility credentials
• Valid US driver's license; US citizenship required for facility credentials
• Ability to lift and move equipment and work outdoors in extreme cold

Required skills

• Working knowledge of diesel electric generating equipment and its hazards and safety precautions
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office
• Preferred: remote polar logistics experience, diesel power generation experience, and strong diesel engine and electrical troubleshooting background
