Power Plant Electrician

About the role

Amentum is hiring a Power Plant Electrician to maintain all electrical equipment in a power plant with minimal supervision. The role involves scheduling and carrying out regular and irregular maintenance of generator electrical components, working with linemen and other infrastructure personnel, and supporting the Utilities Supervisor in goal-setting and strategic planning. The position is based in Antarctica.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain a safe workplace and comply with ESH, waste management and quality assurance requirements, providing the necessary documentation.
• Perform preventive maintenance and repair of switchgear control circuits, generators, contactors and relays, and test and repair safety circuits in generator and control units.
• Inspect electrical power generation systems, monitor component operation and loading, and run equipment efficiently.
• Complete maintenance records and operating logbooks, coordinate repair and spare parts orders, and advise the Utilities Supervisor on power production stock and equipment status.
• Train Power Plant Operators and Mechanics, cover operator shifts and rounds as required, and respond to power outages and equipment failures.
• Work rotating day, swing or night shifts, and be prepared to work outdoors in extreme cold and on various sites.
• Interact with partner companies, the National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials, and participate in dormitory chores while deployed.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED.
• Current Journeyman or Master Electrician license, or equivalent union membership in good standing; a Journeyman license under 8,000 hours or of the residential type is not accepted.
• At least 4 years (8,000 hours) of documented electrical work experience, including at least 2 years in power distribution wiring, power plant and electrical switchgear and control panel maintenance and repair.
• Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods, with medical, dental, drug screening, background checks and US citizenship required for facility credentials.
• Valid US driver's license and willingness to lift and work in extreme cold.

Required skills

• Reading design drawings and wiring diagrams.
• Knowledge of diesel engines and diesel-driven electric generators, and of electrical distribution, control panels and medium voltage switchgear.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Preferred: remote polar logistics experience, AC and DC voltages from 12 to 4160 V, and mechanical or industrial experience.
