Port Engineer

About the role

Curtin Maritime, a maritime solutions provider based in Long Beach, is looking for a Port Engineer to support its Engineering Manager and the team of vessel engineers. The role suits a tugboat chief engineer looking to move to a shoreside position, though prior tugboat experience is not required. Travel is required.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Engineering Manager with vessel engineers and engineering support staff (shoreside mechanics and welders)
• Support implementation of engineering policies and procedures, and enforce them across all vessels
• Manage vessel engineers' work plans through Helm Connect and coordinate task assignments with the Senior Port Engineer
• Ensure parts requests are completed and delivered to vessels, and review engineering requisitions before Senior Port Engineer approval
• Attend vessel drydock periods, report on progress and budgets, and help with mobilization and outfitting of vessels on long-term or specialty jobs
• Act as secondary point of contact for vessel engineers and ensure tasks are completed on time
• Participate in training programs and support development of engineering policies, procedures and training
• Liaise with purchasing, assist in selecting vendors and tracking parts, and ensure Helm Connect is used correctly by all staff

Required profile

• At least 5 years of related experience, or similar mechanical aptitude on tugboats
• TWIC card
• Ability to handle stressful situations, respect the chain of command and take initiative
• Physical ability to work in confined spaces, climb ladders, work in all weather and lift up to 50 pounds unassisted

Required skills

• Strong computer and administrative skills
• Experience managing vessel drydockings and hands-on mechanical skills on a wide range of equipment are ideal
