About the role
The Police Officer Trainee position is an entry‑level, non‑sworn role at the University of Miami. Trainees complete state‑required law‑enforcement training and certification to prepare for appointment as a sworn university police officer, gaining foundational knowledge and practical skills in a higher‑education environment.
Key responsibilities
- Attend and successfully complete the Florida Basic Recruit Training Program at a CJSTC‑certified academy.
- Participate in lectures, practical exercises, demonstrations, inspections, examinations, and related academy activities.
- Study law‑enforcement principles, procedures, tactics, ethics, and related academic topics.
- Demonstrate competency in defensive tactics, firearms, emergency vehicle operations, and first‑responder skills.
- Maintain physical‑fitness standards required for academy expectations and future duties.
- Adhere to conduct, grooming, uniform, appearance, and attendance standards set by the academy and UMPD.
- Pass academy examinations, complete training milestones, and pass the State Officer Certification Examination.
- Participate in UMPD orientation, onboarding, and pre‑sworn training activities.
- Comply with university, department, academy, FDLE, and CJSTC requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned and safeguard university assets.
Required profile
- Minimum age 21 (may apply before 21st birthday).
- U.S. citizen.
- High school diploma or GED.
- At least 54 college credits or three years continuous military service.
- TABE and FBAT required if no AA degree; PAT required for all applicants.
- Valid Florida driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
- Meet all minimum standards established by FDLE and CJSTC under Florida Statute 943.13.
