Police Captain

About the role

The Police Captain provides senior leadership within the Georgetown University Police Department (GUPD), overseeing personnel, resources, and budget to achieve departmental goals. Reporting directly to the Deputy Chief of Police, the Captain ensures safe and secure campus operations across both Georgetown campuses.

Key responsibilities

• Manage, prepare, administer, and direct assigned personnel, resources, and funds.
• Oversee fixed and patrol posts, ensuring proper staffing distribution and high service levels.
• Serve as Operations Captain for all operational functions when assigned.
• Act as Incident Commander during critical incidents, including civil unrest and emergencies.
• Provide feedback, coaching, counseling, and discipline to improve team performance.
• Maintain professional relationships with internal and external partners.

Required profile

• Demonstrated leadership experience in law‑enforcement or security environments.
• Ability to think logically and critically to solve problems and make sound decisions.
• Professional, courteous, and tactful interaction with diverse community members.
• Capacity to handle stressful and rapidly changing situations.
• Willingness to be on call 24 hours for critical incident management.
