About the role
The Plankton Taxonomist will work with A.I.S., Inc. to identify marine fish larvae and invertebrate zooplankton collected in the Gulf of America. The role supports NOAA SEFSC surveys and provides verified taxonomic data for stock assessment and environmental monitoring programs.
Key responsibilities
- Identify marine fish larvae to family, genus or species level using microscopy and digital imaging.
- Image, enumerate, and measure specimens; conduct morphometric and shape analyses.
- Perform larval fish life‑history analyses, including otolith removal, ageing and gut content studies.
- Prepare samples for DNA barcoding to resolve ambiguous identifications.
- Process plankton samples, sort fish larvae and zooplankton, and maintain reference libraries for AI‑assisted validation.
- Curate archived samples and handle hazardous shipping materials.
- Enter, edit, and update plankton data for SEDARs and related databases.
- Coordinate data exchanges with SEAMAP and ZSiOP partners and contribute to proposals, reports, and presentations.
Required profile
- Strong background in marine plankton taxonomy and systematics.
- Experience with microscopic identification and morphometric techniques.
- Ability to work on vessels occasionally and handle hazardous materials safely.
- Familiarity with NOAA and Magnuson‑Stevens Act reporting requirements.
