About the role
Applied Materials’ Ion Implant Defect Science group is seeking a Physicist/Scientist III to join a small, highly collaborative team focused on defect formation and transport mechanisms in semiconductor process tools. The position is ideal for a recent PhD graduate who wants to apply experimental and data‑analysis skills to improve yields and defect control.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct defect‑related experiments, including tool preparation, execution of test plans, and wafer handling.
- Design simple 2D/3D structures for tool testing as needed.
- Analyze experimental data using Python, MATLAB, Excel, JMP, or similar tools.
- Present findings and recommendations through graphs, summaries, and technical presentations.
- Contribute to building a defect library from historical data, ensuring detailed organization.
- Partner with scientists and engineers to define and execute designed experiments.
Required profile
- PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, or related field.
- Strong academic record (preferred GPA ≥ 3.0/4.0).
- Hands‑on experimental or laboratory research experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Required skills
- Python, MATLAB, Excel, JMP for data analysis and visualization.
- SolidWorks, AutoCAD or comparable CAD tools for 2D/3D design.
- Basic descriptive statistics and interest in advanced statistical analysis.
- Knowledge of Design of Experiments (DOE) and data‑driven problem solving.
