Physician (Medical Officer)

About the role

The Social Security Administration is seeking a qualified Physician to serve as the principal medical authority for the agency. This senior medical officer will provide strategic direction, expert analysis, and authoritative consultation on a wide range of health‑related matters.

Key responsibilities

• Lead medical policy development and provide strategic guidance to SSA leadership.
• Conduct and oversee medical consultation cases, including reasonable accommodations, leave, FMLA, infectious disease management, and disability retirement.
• Research medical topics and produce fact sheets for internal stakeholders.
• Represent SSA in high‑level meetings, briefings, and inter‑agency workgroups.
• Develop and implement emergency medical management protocols for traumatic events, natural disasters, and public‑health emergencies.
• Evaluate medical documentation, prepare medical opinions, and advise managers on employee health matters.
• Plan and manage short‑ and long‑range health services programs to ensure effective implementation.

Required profile

• U.S. citizenship.
• Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited U.S. or Canadian medical school.
• Accreditation must be recognized by the Council on Medical Education, AAMC, LCME, COCA, or an equivalent U.S. accrediting body.
• Eligibility for direct‑hire appointment to the civil service.
