About the role
Applied Materials is seeking a skilled Orbital Welder II to join its precision‑fabrication team in Austin. The role involves operating orbital welding equipment to build, repair and test mechanical, vacuum and pneumatic assemblies used in semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
Key responsibilities
- Set up and operate autogenous and wire‑fed orbital welding equipment to join stainless‑steel and specialty‑alloy tubing to exacting quality standards.
- Read and interpret work orders, blueprints, weld procedure specifications (WPS) and P&ID drawings to determine weld sequence and acceptance criteria.
- Perform mechanical assembly, disassembly, troubleshooting and repair of vacuum, gas‑delivery and pneumatic sub‑assemblies.
- Inspect welds visually and with precision measuring and leak‑detection instruments, documenting any non‑conformances.
- Maintain, calibrate and troubleshoot welding heads and power supplies, recording labor and material usage in the production tracking system.
Required profile
- High school diploma or GED; technical diploma or associate degree in welding technology or a related trade preferred.
- 1‑3 years of hands‑on welding experience in manufacturing, aerospace, semiconductor or high‑purity environments; orbital/TIG experience a plus.
- Current or attainable AWS D1.1/D1.6, ASME Section IX or equivalent welder certification.
- Basic computer literacy for data entry into MES/ERP systems.
Required skills
- Proficiency with orbital welding (autogenous and wire‑fed), TIG/GTAW and MIG processes.
- Ability to read AWS welding symbols, WPS documents and engineering drawings/blueprints.
- Experience with leak detection, vacuum testing and precision measuring instruments.
- Knowledge of high‑purity semiconductor cleanliness standards (e.g., SEMI F19/F20).
- OSHA 10 training or ability to obtain certification.
