Ophthalmic Technician 1 – Full Time

About the role

The University of Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute is seeking a full‑time Ophthalmic Technician (OT1) to provide comprehensive eye‑care testing and support to providers in Naples, FL. The role involves direct patient interaction, documentation in the EMR, and participation in clinical research.

Key responsibilities

• Perform and document clinical tests such as visual fields, intra‑ocular pressure (Goldman, Tono‑Pen, I‑Care), pachymetry, visual acuity, color vision, lensometry, manual refraction, and sensorimotor exams.
• Conduct ocular motility, stereopsis, confrontational and automated perimetry, Humphrey and VR visual fields, and Amsler Grid assessments.
• Insert and remove hard and soft contact lenses, administer eye drops, and record allergies and medication histories.
• Support providers by completing accurate EMR documentation and preparing patients for intravitreal injections (IVI).
• Maintain equipment calibration, stock rooms, and ensure proper infection‑control practices.
• Travel to satellite eye centers as needed and work evenings or weekends when required.
• Assist with virtual care encounters and motility examinations.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum 1 year of relevant ophthalmic or eye‑care experience.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Professional appearance and ability to work with patients of all ages.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills and attention to detail.
