About the role
The New Roots Assistant supports the International Rescue Committee’s New Roots program, which connects low‑income families and refugee communities with urban agriculture, nutrition education, and food‑access resources. The role works across farm, garden, market, and youth activities to help participants grow healthy food and develop leadership skills.
Key responsibilities
- Assist farm and garden operations, including irrigation, planting, and youth mentorship.
- Support Youth Roots curriculum delivery in partnership with the Youth Roots Specialist, covering agriculture, nutrition, food justice and land justice topics.
- Help organize and staff farmers markets and food‑access aggregation activities.
- Communicate program information to participants and families, using interpreters when needed.
- Enter activity data into the program database and maintain accurate records.
- Perform site maintenance at the main educational garden in Tukwila and at Horseneck Farm.
- Manage inventory of program supplies and tools.
Required profile
- Passion for humanitarian work and community‑based agriculture.
- Ability to work outdoors and perform physical tasks such as irrigation and site upkeep.
- Strong communication skills, including working with interpreters and diverse language groups.
- Flexibility to collaborate with multiple teams (farm, market, youth) and attend program events.
