Microbiologist – Food Pathogen Testing

About the role

We are looking for a Microbiologist to join SGS’s food testing laboratory in Mexico. The successful candidate will work in a state‑of‑the‑art lab performing microbiological analyses on food samples to detect pathogens and ensure product safety.

Key responsibilities

• Operate and maintain laboratory equipment such as analytical balances, homogenizers, incubators, water baths, plate readers and spectrophotometers.
• Perform pathogen detection using commercial protein‑ and DNA‑based platforms (VIDAS, BAX, GDS, GeneUp, BioRAd) and identify microorganisms with the VITEK system.
• Conduct basic wet‑chemistry analyses for moisture, protein, fat, ash and salt content.
• Handle samples, follow operating procedures and record results accurately.
• Report equipment deficiencies, document non‑conformities and support corrective actions.

Required profile

• Degree in Microbiology, Food Science or related field.
• Experience working in a food testing laboratory is preferred.
• Ability to follow strict SOPs and maintain detailed records.

Required skills

• Proficiency with VIDAS, BAX, GDS, GeneUp, BioRAd platforms.
• Experience using VITEK Microbial Identification System.
• Competence in operating spectrophotometers, analytical balances and plate readers.
• Knowledge of wet‑chemistry methods for moisture, protein, fat, ash and salt analysis.
