Medical Reviewer – Part‑time, Home Based (Scotland)

About the role

The Medical Reviewer provides independent, statutory review of death certification across Scotland, ensuring accuracy, improving public health data, and strengthening clinical governance. This part‑time, home‑based position works three days a week with occasional travel and on‑call duties.

Key responsibilities

• Review Medical Certificates of Cause of Death (MCCD) promptly and consistently.
• Develop and maintain relationships with certifying doctors and other stakeholders.
• Provide education and support to doctors on death certification standards.
• Contribute to Healthcare Improvement Scotland’s Clinical Engagement Strategy.
• Participate in an on‑call rota (approximately 1 in 9).

Required profile

• Registered medical practitioner licensed by the General Medical Council.
• Extensive senior‑clinical experience with direct knowledge of death certification.
• Strong interpersonal and communication abilities.
• Evidence of supporting professional development of colleagues.
