Medical Laboratory Scientist - PRN Night Shift

About the role

AdventHealth in Apopka, Florida is hiring a Medical Laboratory Scientist for a PRN night shift, working every Friday from 18:00 to 06:30. The role covers pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical laboratory tasks, with flexibility in scheduling and possible overtime, weekends and holidays.

Key responsibilities

• Perform pre-analytical activities: equipment maintenance, function checks, inventory control, supply stocking, specimen collection and biological specimen processing
• Complete tests and analytical procedures accurately according to standard operating procedures
• Report results and provide technical support (post-analytical activities)
• Maintain laboratory equipment and spaces through cleaning and disinfection
• Evaluate new laboratory techniques and procedures, assist with data collection and special projects
• Participate in laboratory and hospital performance improvement activities and proficiency testing
• May act as a preceptor for new employees and students, and guide technicians and support staff
• Follow safety policies including PPE, handwashing and hazardous chemical handling, and follow the Corporate Compliance Plan

Required profile

• Associate degree in a laboratory science (chemical or biological science) or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or CLIA equivalency
• Ability to work independently, direct workflow with minimal supervision and maintain equipment and records
• Ability to educate and train new staff, and to read, write and follow instructions in English
• College-level math, computer reasoning and language skills; ability to handle infectious specimens and chemicals safely
• Willingness to learn new techniques and procedures

Required skills

• Technical skills in laboratory testing, procedures and processes
• Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office
• Proficiency in a wide variety of laboratory techniques (preferred): specimen preparation, DNA/RNA extractions, stem cell isolation, histology preparations, and molecular assays
