Mechanical Engineer – Shipbuilding (Level 2)

About the role

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer (Level 2) to support shipboard structural modifications, equipment foundations, and corrosion mitigation at Newport News Shipbuilding. The role involves designing, testing, and validating mechanical and electromechanical systems for naval vessels.

Key responsibilities

• Support shipboard structural modifications, fabricate equipment foundations, and evaluate and mitigate corrosion.
• Review and execute mechanical procedures and certification documentation.
• Evaluate non‑conformances, develop repair recommendations, and verify implementation during ship construction and outfitting.
• Conduct ship checks to confirm as‑built conditions and ensure compliance with engineering standards.
• Coordinate design and testing activities with NAVSEA, Electric Boat, and internal teams, resolving technical issues.
• Provide on‑site engineering support for alignment, fit‑up, welding, and dimensional control.
• Prepare and present technical reports, analyses, and recommendations to management and external customers.

Required profile

• U.S. citizenship.
• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program (Master’s degree acceptable with no experience).
• Minimum 2 years of relevant engineering experience (or equivalent for Master’s).
• Ability to work full‑time onsite in Newport News, Virginia.

Required skills

• Knowledge of NDT standards and welding standards.
• Experience with mechanical components and fabrication, valves, pumps, seals, and hydraulic actuators.
• Understanding of mechanical engineering and design principles applied to shipbuilding.
• Familiarity with thermal‑hydraulic and heat‑transfer systems.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
