Mechanical Design Engineer – Sensing

About the role

Tesla is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join the Autopilot and Electronics Product Design team. You will develop mechanical solutions for vehicle sensing devices such as temperature, rain, cabin and tire‑pressure sensors, taking concepts from first principles through mass production.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate with interior, exterior and sensing teams to integrate sensors while addressing environmental, thermal and assembly constraints.
• Lead prototype builds, component fabrication, testing and validation.
• Design all mechanical components, including PCBA outlines, heatsinks, shield‑can enclosures, connectors and sensor mounts.
• Perform mechanical analyses – structural, tolerance, FEA – and ensure design for assembly.
• Create detailed 3D models, technical drawings and documentation using 3DX.
• Work with cross‑functional teams to transition designs from prototype to production.
• Support engineering test plans, data analysis and troubleshooting.
• Communicate with suppliers on DFM feedback and assist with tooling and assembly ramp‑up.

Required profile

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
• Minimum 2 years of mechanical design experience, preferably on sensing devices.
• Proficiency with CAD tools (CATIA or 3DX) and familiarity with ANSYS or similar FEA software.
• Experience taking designs from concept through mass production.
• Basic knowledge of electrical and thermal design, PCBA and sensor packaging.
• Strong problem‑solving ability and first‑principles analysis skills.
