About the role
We are looking for a Mechanical Build Engineer to lead the design, integration and commissioning of main propulsion and related machinery for autonomous surface vessels. The role combines hands‑on shipyard work with remote collaboration with our engineering team in Austin, supporting cutting‑edge maritime autonomy projects.
Key responsibilities
- Assist in the design, analysis and integration of propulsion, fuel, seawater cooling and generator systems, including engines, transmissions, shafting, propellers, waterjets and steering gear.
- Produce and update CAD models, perform system optimization and maintain as‑built documentation.
- Serve as liaison between engineering, drafting and production to resolve technical issues during construction.
- Identify non‑conformances, lead root‑cause analysis and manage Issue Review Boards and rework plans.
- Coordinate Engineering Change Orders, ensuring traceability and verification.
- Support integration of autonomous navigation and control systems.
- Oversee installation, laser shaft alignment, and commissioning of engines, stern tubes, propellers, rudders and generator sets.
- Conduct functional testing such as engine run‑ups, load tests, pressure and cooling system checks.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture or a related discipline.
- Familiarity with maritime standards such as ABS machinery rules, ABYC fuel system standards and US Coast Guard engineering regulations.
- Experience with ship‑yard installation, shaft alignment and marine propulsion equipment.
Required skills
- CAD modeling (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD).
- Laser alignment equipment for precision shaft alignment.
- Knowledge of ABS machinery rules and ABYC fuel system standards.
- Understanding of US Coast Guard engineering regulations.
