MEC Shop Foreman - Antarctica

About the role

Amentum is hiring a Mechanical Equipment Center (MEC) Shop Foreman to lead a team of technicians in a small, fast-paced shop in Antarctica. In summer the foreman runs day-to-day shop operations; in winter he oversees winter-over operations. He works under the MEC Supervisor and may be required to travel to the Denver headquarters office before field seasons.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain and repair snowmobiles, ATVs, gasoline and diesel generators up to 100 kW, portable heaters, ice drills, chainsaws and other small equipment, including engine rebuilds and drive-train repairs
• Directly supervise mechanics, skilled workers and helpers, assign tasks, coordinate workflow and inspect workmanship
• Ensure work requests are prioritized, monitor in-progress work, document work orders and submit project reports
• Generate and approve supply requisitions and handle confidential personnel and management matters
• Train staff and grantees on safe use, operation and field maintenance of equipment, and on environmental health and safety and quality assurance requirements
• Modify and fabricate equipment to meet grantee needs, maintain spare parts and tools, and operate shop equipment such as welders and compressors

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED
• At least five years of equipment maintenance experience, with at least three years at a supervisory level
• Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods, with medical, dental, drug screening and background checks completed
• Valid US driver's license; US citizenship required for facility credentials at this location
• Able to lift and move heavy items, climb in and out of equipment, crawl and work outdoors in extreme cold

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Word and computer-based documentation of work orders and inventory
• Preferred: technical school training, experience with diesel engines, electrical power generation, engine rebuilds, wiring schematics, inventory management and teaching others to maintain equipment
