Material Scientist – Sleep & Respiratory Care

About the role
The Material Scientist will use materials, chemistry and compliance expertise to work with R&D teams, ensuring product safety and designing world‑class Sleep & Respiratory Care (S&RC) devices for Philips customers.
Key responsibilities
- Review requirements and develop test plans that provide design insights and demonstrate material safety.
- Perform materials assessments, manage testing for product development, and conduct long‑term accelerated aging studies.
- Communicate and coordinate testing needs with internal and external facilities.
- Assess material failures and drive corrective actions with project teams.
- Scout and select new polymer materials and processing/finishing technologies for innovative S&RC products.
- Follow internal quality manuals, work instructions and forms.
- Report to the Materials Manager and collaborate cross‑functionally with R&D, NPI, CROs, regulatory agencies and external scientists.
- Travel up to 10% as required.
Required profile
- Minimum 1 year experience in Materials Science focused on polymer product/process development and testing.
- Hands‑on laboratory testing and analysis of chemical and physical properties for medical devices (strongly preferred).
- Strong root‑cause analysis experience supporting CAPA investigations.
- Understanding of ISO 10993 standards and knowledge of FDA, EU MDR and global medical‑device regulations (preferred).
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering or related field.
- Ability to collaborate with cross‑functional teams and external partners.
- U.S. work authorization and residence within commuting distance of New Kensington, PA.
