Marine Biologist (At‑Sea Monitor) – Seabrook, NH

About the role

A.I.S., Inc. is seeking Marine Biologists to serve as At‑Sea Monitors on commercial fishing vessels operating in New England and the Mid‑Atlantic. Monitors collect biological, gear and catch data for the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Northeast Fisheries Science Center, supporting sustainable fisheries management.

Key responsibilities

• Record detailed information on gear, fishing activity, catch, discard and incidental takes (marine mammals, seabirds, turtles).
• Collect biological samples and conduct fish, marine mammal and sea turtle identification on deck.
• Follow standardized sampling protocols and safety procedures during trips lasting 1–14 days.
• Enter and transmit data to NMFS for stock assessment and management decisions.
• Participate in a 3‑week paid training program covering gear types, identification, and safety.

Required profile

• Physical ability to lift heavy equipment and work long hours in rough sea conditions.
• Willingness to be away from home for multiple consecutive days.
• Strong interest in fishery sustainability, marine biology and data‑driven conservation.
• Basic understanding of commercial fishing operations is advantageous.
