Maintenance Specialist - Antarctic Support Contract

About the role

Amentum is hiring a Maintenance Specialist for a seasonal contract supporting the National Science Foundation's United States Antarctic Program under the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC). The specialist performs maintenance or construction work, or both, under the supervision of the Preventative Maintenance Foreman (McMurdo/South Pole), Facilities Maintenance Supervisor or Preventative Maintenance Coordinator (Palmer). Tasking depends on prior experience and ASC schedule needs.

Key responsibilities

• Diagnose, repair and carry out scheduled preventative maintenance on buildings, systems, equipment, fixtures and infrastructure.
• Manage small maintenance projects in your work area, coordinating other trades, equipment, tools, parts and schedules, and report to the PM Foreman and Facilities Maintenance Supervisor.
• Perform major overhauls, including dismantling, replacing parts and repairing HVAC, refrigeration, overhead doors, hoists, compressors, pumps, kitchen/galley equipment and other facility and non-facility equipment.
• Work from job plans, schematics, blueprints, wiring diagrams, vendor manuals and specifications; analyze equipment breakdowns and make technical decisions based on manufacturer recommendations.
• Respond to emergency service calls during and outside normal hours, and lead and oversee Utility Technicians on a regular basis.
• Implement and enforce the Preventative Maintenance Program, including inventory and work orders in the Maximo database, and maintain detailed records and logs.
• Document hours worked, materials used and processes, advise the supervisor on progress and resource needs, and prepare material resupply requests.
• Follow SOPs, identify hazards and code violations, and comply with ASC environmental, safety, health, waste management and quality assurance requirements.
• Deploy to remote research support facilities for day trips or extended periods, and complete the required medical, dental, drug screening, background checks and federal background check.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED.
• Five years of facilities maintenance experience covering preventative and corrective maintenance, including industrial and/or commercial facilities.
• Experience in refrigeration, HVAC, plumbing and electrical, and with fuel oil-fired combustion appliances (South Pole and Palmer).
• Ability to work independently and to lift and move items up to safety regulation limits.
• Willingness to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods.

Required skills

• Reading and interpreting design drawings, specifications, diagrams, maintenance manuals and troubleshooting guides.
• Writing work plans, job hazard analysis and job safety analysis under a permit-to-work system.
• Using electrical/electronic and mechanical test equipment, meters, scopes and probes; troubleshooting and heating and ventilation maintenance.
• Knowledge of NFPA 70E and OSHA electrical safety, LOTO procedures, confined space safety and fall protection.
• Preferred: Building Automation Systems, fuel piping, overhead garage doors, Maximo or other CMMS, Microsoft Office.
