Maintenance Equipment Technician – Engineering Technician IV

About the role

The Engineering Technician IV provides technical guidance, training, and support for the use, operation, and repair of equipment across assigned geographic areas for the State of Illinois Department of Transportation.

Key responsibilities

• Ensures effective expenditure of budgetary funds for truck and major off‑road equipment repairs.
• Provides training for personnel on equipment operation, safe use, and repairs.
• Diagnoses technical equipment problems using diagnostic tools and offers appropriate solutions.
• Guides the utilization of department‑provided software and hardware for equipment repairs.
• Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules and equitable treatment of all employees.

Required profile

• Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre‑engineering, or related technical/science curriculum plus five years of engineering experience, OR seven years of engineering experience.
• Training in automotive and/or diesel technology equivalent to two years of mechanical engineering coursework is preferred.

Required skills

• Proficiency with inventory databases and software such as Asset Management Program (AMP).
• Experience using diagnostic systems: Cummins Insite, Networked Equipment Diagnostics (NED), Diagnostic Link Bus (DLB), Bendix ACom, Allison Diagnostic Optimi.
• Knowledge of equipment repairs and diesel engine diagnostics.
