Legal Director

About the role

The Global Justice Center is seeking a Legal Director to shape and execute its international legal strategy for gender equality. Based in New York City, the senior lawyer will lead the development of feminist legal theories, guide advocacy on reproductive autonomy, and influence progressive interpretations of international public, humanitarian, human rights and criminal law.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement GJC’s legal and programmatic strategies as the chief thought leader.
• Lead innovative legal work across international public, humanitarian, criminal and human rights law.
• Identify and develop new legal avenues to advance gender equality.
• Monitor legal, policy and feminist movement trends to seize advocacy opportunities.
• Respond to emerging news events and legal developments.
• Represent GJC externally as an authority on feminist legal strategies.
• Collaborate with the Executive Director to create annual and multi‑year program plans.

Required profile

• Extensive experience as a senior lawyer with a focus on feminist legal theory, gender analysis, and international human rights or criminal law.
• Proven track record of developing and advancing progressive legal interpretations.
• Demonstrated leadership of legal teams and coalition building.
• Strong analytical, writing and public‑speaking abilities.
• Willingness to travel domestically and internationally (10‑15%).
