Lead Opto-Mechanical Engineer

About the role

CACI is looking for a Lead Opto-Mechanical Engineer to join its Photonics team, which works on laser communications technology used by NASA and other optical systems for defense and science. The engineer designs packaging for complex subsystems and leads a team of designers, analysts and engineers, with up to 10% travel across the continental US.

Key responsibilities

• Design packaging for complex subsystems with optical, photonic, optoelectronic, electrical and mechanical elements for R&D and production programs for U.S. government customers.
• Own mechanical designs from concept through flight qualification, including requirements definition, trade studies and detailed design.
• Collaborate with optical engineers to turn optical prescriptions into robust mechanical designs, and design optical mounts for launch loads, vibration, shock, thermal cycling and vacuum.
• Manage third-party vendors to resolve specification, performance and reliability issues.
• Support integration, alignment and test (I&T) activities, including environmental testing and troubleshooting.
• Lead a team of designers, analysts and engineers, giving technical direction, guidance and mentorship.
• Contribute to project schedules and budgets.

Required profile

• US citizen.
• BS in Mechanical Engineering and at least 10 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, skills and experience.
• Experience with optomechanical systems, precision structures or high-stability mechanical assemblies.
• Strong understanding of optical mounts, materials, tolerancing and alignment.
• Familiarity with Design for Manufacturing (DFM).
• Master's degree preferred.

Required skills

• Proficiency with computer-aided design software, with SolidWorks preferred.
• Static, modal, thermal, nonlinear or dynamic simulations with FEA solvers (Ansys or Nastran), or collaboration with analysts.
• Optical and electronic subassembly layout, including board physical design, chassis or enclosure design, optical fiber routing and connector selection.
• Schedule creation, effort estimation and labor budget management.
