Laboratory Technologist – Austin, TX

About the role

As a Laboratory Technologist at 3M’s Science Center in Austin, you will work with cutting‑edge automated production equipment and collaborate with global teams to ensure reliable laboratory operations. The role blends field service, equipment maintenance, and technical support to keep manufacturing processes running smoothly.

Key responsibilities

• Support automated production equipment at customer sites.
• Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain manufacturing and laboratory equipment.
• Perform preventive maintenance and assist with equipment upgrades.
• Participate in installation, startup, testing, and service activities.
• Diagnose controls‑related issues, including PLC‑based systems.
• Document service and maintenance activities.
• Partner with internal teams and customers to resolve technical issues.
• Ensure safe, reliable, and efficient equipment operation.

Required profile

• Associate’s degree, vocational training, or trade certification in a science/technical discipline, OR a High School Diploma/GED plus five years of technical experience in electrical, maintenance, repair, or laboratory equipment troubleshooting.
• Experience in private, public, government, or military environments.
• Ability to travel to external customer sites (up to 20% travel, may include up to 30% domestic).
• Capacity to work independently in both field and laboratory settings.

• Mechanical and electrical troubleshooting.

• General industrial maintenance knowledge.
• Experience with CNC or manual machining.
