Laboratory Manager

About the role

The Department of the Built Environment at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore is seeking a Laboratory Manager to provide technical support, oversee inventory and maintenance, and assist faculty and students across multiple specialized labs.

Key responsibilities

• Provide hands‑on technical support for all department labs.
• Develop, maintain, and operate testing and surveying equipment in labs such as Construction, Concrete Testing, Environmental Testing, Hydraulics, Material Testing, Soil Mechanics, Structural Testing, Surveying, Welding, 3D Printing, and others.
• Design and develop new laboratory spaces as program needs evolve.
• Ensure compliance with ASTM standards and OSHA Laboratory Standard, creating safety guidelines and documentation.
• Manage lab safety signage, kits, and overall laboratory layout.
• Create and update manuals and step‑by‑step operating instructions.

Required profile

• Experience supporting academic or research laboratories in the built environment or related fields.
• Familiarity with ASTM testing procedures and OSHA laboratory safety regulations.
• Strong organizational skills for inventory control and equipment maintenance.
• Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students.
