Juvenile Correctional Sergeant – Milledgeville RYDC

About the role

The State of Georgia’s Department of Juvenile Justice seeks a dedicated Juvenile Correctional Sergeant to join the Milledgeville Regional Youth Detention Center (RYDC). In this position you will help create a safe, therapeutic, and educational environment for detained youth while supporting the facility’s mission of rehabilitation.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain custody, security, and care of youth in accordance with department policies and standard operating procedures.
• Provide direct support, guidance, and structure to promote pro‑social behavior, safety, and personal development.
• Complete administrative paperwork, maintain records, and prepare reports.
• Inspect, inventory, and control security equipment and technology.
• Supervise and mentor subordinate correctional staff, including training and performance oversight.
• Act as Shift Supervisor in the absence of the Lieutenant, ensuring continuous facility operations.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED.
• At least six months experience as a Juvenile Correctional Officer 3 (PSP222) or equivalent.
• Ability to complete Leadership Core Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced training within six months, or four years of military experience.
• Obtain and maintain State of Georgia P.O.S.T. certification within six months of hire.
• Physical ability to meet the position’s agility and safety standards.

Required skills

• Knowledge of Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice policies and procedures.
• Proficiency in using security equipment and related technology.
• Ability to complete required certifications and training programs.
