IT Generalist II

About the role

The IT Generalist II provides advanced operational support for secure Linux, virtualized, and containerized computing environments that enable instructional and research activities within Engineering and Computing Technology Services at FIU. The role focuses on infrastructure security, virtualization, container platforms, and AI/ML application support.

Key responsibilities

• Administer and support Linux‑based systems for instructional, research, and shared computing services, handling provisioning, patching, and lifecycle management.
• Operate and maintain virtualized environments for labs, research workloads, and internal services, monitoring performance, availability, and resource utilization.
• Support container platforms using Docker and lightweight Kubernetes distributions (e.g., K3s), including image maintenance and platform stability.
• Perform security operations such as vulnerability remediation, log review, access‑control enforcement, and host‑based security monitoring; participate in incident response and system recovery.
• Assist faculty and students with scientific and AI‑enabled applications (TensorFlow, PyTorch) and troubleshoot environment configurations.
• Develop automation and scripting solutions (shell, Python) to streamline administration, monitoring, and security tasks.
• Maintain operational and security documentation and contribute to knowledge sharing within the IT team.
• Serve as essential personnel during university emergencies.

Required profile

• Experience administering Linux systems in an academic or research environment.
• Proficiency with virtualization technologies and managing virtual infrastructure.
• Hands‑on experience with container platforms such as Docker and lightweight Kubernetes (K3s).
• Background in infrastructure security operations, including vulnerability remediation and incident response.
• Familiarity with AI/ML frameworks like TensorFlow and PyTorch.
• Strong scripting skills in shell and Python for automation.
