Immigration & Citizenship Intern (Unpaid)

About the role

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is seeking an unpaid Immigration & Citizenship Intern to support its immigration team in New Jersey. This role offers hands‑on experience with refugee resettlement, immigration law, and community outreach while working directly with clients seeking status adjustments and citizenship.

Key responsibilities

• Assist immigration staff with preparation and filing of adjustment of status, green card, citizenship, family petition, work permit, travel document, and DACA renewal applications.
• Meet with clients to review documentation, gather required information, and ensure accurate completion of forms.
• Notify clients of case updates via phone or mail and follow up on requests for evidence or additional documentation.
• Support advocacy efforts with USCIS and relevant legislative offices as needed.
• Help plan and execute community outreach events, including know‑your‑rights and citizenship workshops.
• Conduct outreach mailings, track and file applications, and maintain client data in the online immigration database.
• Perform other duties assigned by the Immigration Program Manager or Immigration Assistant.

Required profile

• Law student (JD candidate) preferred; college students will also be considered.
• Fluency in Haitian Creole, Spanish, Arabic, Dari, or Ukrainian is strongly preferred.
• Familiarity with the IRC mission and ability to represent the organization appropriately.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills for working with multicultural, limited‑English‑speaking clients.

Required skills

• Basic knowledge of U.S. immigration processes and documentation requirements.
