HVAC Mechanic II

About the role
The Physical Plant Department at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore is seeking a full‑time, non‑exempt HVAC Mechanic II. Reporting to the plant supervisor, you will install, service, and repair commercial and industrial heating, ventilation and air‑conditioning systems, including heat pumps and centralized units up to 250 tons.
Key responsibilities
- Operate, service and repair air‑handling units and hydronic pumping systems of various designs.
- Perform test‑and‑balance procedures on air and hydronic circuits and make adjustments for optimal performance.
- Test and treat water cooling towers, add chemicals to control alkalinity, algae, scale, corrosion and bio‑growth.
- Diagnose, maintain and repair gas burners, replace heat exchangers and adjust fuel‑air ratios.
- Maintain variable‑frequency‑drive (VFD) applications on pumps and fans.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Required profile
- High school diploma or GED.
- Six years of progressively responsible experience with HVAC, refrigeration, temperature control, steam distribution or heating trades.
- Valid Maryland non‑commercial Class C driver’s license.
Required skills
- Knowledge of air‑conditioning and refrigeration principles, refrigerant types and gas reclamation.
- Familiarity with OSHA regulations, National Electric Code, and basic mathematics for system calculations.
- Working knowledge of plumbing, steam fitting and electrical trades as they relate to HVAC.
- Experience with variable‑frequency‑drive (VFD) controls, gas burners, heat exchangers and cooling‑tower chemical treatment.
