About the role
The Human Factors Engineering (HFE) Intern will support the IDHF/UX team in designing and evaluating user interfaces for medical devices. This 4‑month co‑op runs from January to May 2027 at the Raritan, NJ office and provides hands‑on experience in user‑centered design within a global MedTech environment.
Key responsibilities
- Apply human‑factors standards (e.g., IEC 62366) and best practices to inform safe, effective product designs.
- Plan, conduct, and report user research activities such as ethnography, focus groups, formative usability tests, and summative validation studies.
- Consolidate user feedback into actionable design insights and perform root‑cause analysis for use‑related problems.
- Develop and maintain human‑factors documentation, including test plans, risk analyses, and usability reports.
Required profile
- Enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s program in Human Factors Engineering, Usability Engineering, Cognitive Science, Psychology, Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering (2nd year or above).
- Authorized to work in the United States without future sponsorship.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0 with demonstrated leadership or community involvement.
- Availability for a minimum 4‑month on‑site co‑op rotation.
Required skills
- Human‑factors methods: task analysis, risk analysis, usability testing, ethnographic research.
- Familiarity with medical device regulations and standards (FDA, IEC 62366, ISO, AAMI).
- Ability to create clear documentation such as test plans, informed‑consent forms, and usability reports.
