High Throughput Phenotyping Research Associate – Strawberry Breeding

About the role
The High Throughput Phenotyping Research Associate will support Driscoll’s strawberry breeding program by executing research‑level trials, collecting precise phenotypic data, and integrating those data into genomic prediction workflows. Working onsite in Watsonville, the role combines field, greenhouse, lab and data‑analysis activities to accelerate the development of superior strawberry cultivars.
Key responsibilities
- Coordinate and execute specialized breeding trials across field, greenhouse, nursery and farm sites under the guidance of the Strawberry Breeder.
- Supervise seasonal staff during evaluation, harvest and operational periods.
- Collect and analyze fruit quality metrics (Brix, pH, flavor, shelf life, bruising, rot/mold, color) and maintain trial inventory.
- Support tissue collection, genotyping and genomic‑selection pipelines.
- Implement and refine high‑throughput phenotyping approaches, including imaging systems and AI‑enabled tools.
- Validate datasets, ensure data quality and deliver timely analytical results.
- Maintain fruit laboratory organization, equipment, labeling and workflow documentation.
Required profile
- 3‑5 years of experience in plant breeding, horticulture, agronomy or related research.
- Hands‑on experience with field and greenhouse trial management.
- Ability to work safely in agricultural environments and handle laboratory equipment.
- Strong analytical mindset with experience applying statistical methods to phenotypic data.
