Healthcare & Benefits Intern (Unpaid)

About the role

The International Rescue Committee is seeking an unpaid Healthcare & Benefits Intern to support newly arrived refugees and immigrants in New York City. You will work closely with Healthcare Benefit Navigators to help clients access public benefit programs and navigate the U.S. refugee resettlement process.

Key responsibilities

• Assist with screening and enrollment for Medicaid, NYC Care, SNAP, WIC, FairFares, Child Care Vouchers, IDNYC, and related programs.
• Accompany clients to public benefits appointments when needed.
• Sort and review benefits-related mail and communicate updates to clients.
• Schedule medical and dental appointments for clients.
• Develop and deliver educational materials and workshops on public benefits.
• Collaborate on updating a Community Resources Guide.
• Maintain accurate case files and digital records in spreadsheets.
• Adhere to IRC confidentiality and privacy policies.
• Provide translation and interpretation services as required.

Required profile

• Strong interest in humanitarian work and refugee resettlement.
• Ability to work sensitively with diverse cultural backgrounds.
• Detail‑oriented with good organizational skills.
• Willingness to accompany clients to appointments and handle confidential information.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
