Grounds Supervisor

About the role

The Physical Plant Department at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore is hiring a full‑time, non‑exempt Grounds Supervisor. You will lead a team of groundskeepers in maintaining campus lawns, gardens, athletic fields and related facilities, ensuring a safe and attractive environment for students, staff, and visitors.

Key responsibilities

• Determine work priorities, plan schedules, assign tasks and train subordinate staff.
• Supervise all grounds‑maintenance activities such as cultivating, planting, watering, fertilizing, weeding, mowing and pruning lawns, gardens, shrubs and trees.
• Oversee trash and debris removal, as well as snow and ice removal using hand and power equipment, and apply salt, sand and de‑icers.
• Prepare and maintain written reports, records and inventory of supplies, materials and equipment.
• Ensure operational readiness and safety of equipment including mowers, tillers, sweepers, snow blowers, edgers, shovels and small vehicles.
• Perform routine assembly, cleaning and maintenance of equipment as needed.
• Assist with maintenance of outdoor athletic fields and facilities.
• Measure, mix and apply fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides and other chemicals according to instructions.
• Perform groundskeeper duties when required.

Required profile

• Minimum three years of grounds‑keeping experience in a lead or supervisory capacity.
• Ability to operate a variety of grounds equipment safely and correctly.
• Computer literacy and ability to complete computer‑based tasks independently.
• May be subject to medical inquiries or examinations to confirm ability to perform the job.
